BUILT CoLAB organises Cycle of Training Actions on Contaminated Soils and Rocks

BUILT CoLAB is organising a Cycle of Training Actions on Contaminated Soils and Rocks. This initiative follows on from the protocol it established with APA – Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (Portuguese Environment Agency) and the Fundo Ambiental (Environmental Fund) with the aim of promoting a series of actions within the scope of the ‘Soil Quality Assessment’ project.

The main focus of these actions is on Contaminated Soils and Rocks, with the aim of sensitising various players – from private sector companies to public environmental bodies – to the processes of soil quality assessment, risk analysis and sustainable remediation, thus contributing to preventing and combating soil pollution.

In October, three training sessions will be held for stakeholders involved in contaminated soils and rocks, in order to provide various contents on soil assessment operations and contaminated soil remediation techniques.

This session on contaminated soil and rock, dedicated to the perspective of soil management organisations and remediation companies, will cover concepts, the existing legal framework, innovative techniques and examples of soil assessment and remediation, and the opportunities and good practices they should implement. Case studies on soil and CDW treatment systems and the recovery of recycled aggregate will also be analysed for a deeper understanding of the subject.

These Capacity Building Actions will take into account this Soil Monitoring Directive issued by the Council of the European Union in June, whose general guideline aims to make soil health monitoring mandatory, provides guiding principles for sustainable soil management and addresses situations where soil contamination poses unacceptable risks to health and the environment.
