The H2SYMBIOTIC project aims to develop integrated and modular green hydrogen hubs, promoting decarbonisation and the circular economy in industrial and urban sectors. The project adopts an innovative and multidisciplinary approach that combines advanced digital technologies, sustainable physico-chemical processes and industrial symbiosis strategies, creating comprehensive ecosystems that integrate the production, purification, storage, recovery and efficient use of hydrogen.
Structured on four main principles, H2SYMBIOTIC addresses:
- The use of renewable sources and recycled water to power sustainable processes;
- Modular, flexible and smart production of green hydrogen, using alkaline electrolysers integrated with renewable energy sources;
- The circular utilisation of by-products, such as biogenic CO₂, oxygen and nutrients, through innovative processes of purification, methanation, recovery and reuse
- The optimised and digitalised sector-specific use of hydrogen, with advanced monitoring, simulation and control systems, including the creation of digital twins that enable real-time operational optimisation and long-term planning.
BUILT CoLAB, in collaboration with INESC TEC and the other partners, will focus on developing the Digital Twin for the integrated optimisation of wastewater treatment plants, one of the key technological features of the H2SYMBIOTIC project. This tool will enable the simulation, prediction and optimisation of interactions between energy, water, heat, oxygen and hydrogen flows, creating a virtual environment that supports more informed decisions and more efficient processes.
